They recall when hours or even days were spent hand drawing designs on velum, with the proper distortion calculated into each line. There were many painful hours hunched over a die board cutting each line with a k12, as well as the tedious process of bending and cutting each piece of rule before hammering the final pieces into position with a rawhide mallet. The production of each die was a highly skilled process and could take days.

With today's technology, manufacturing cutting dies has changed dramatically. There are CAD computers connected to automated sample cutting tables to perfect the designs required for intricate packaging. The powerful lasers cut the slots into the die boards within thousands of an inch and machines are used to bend and cut the rule to precisely match each laser cut.
